F. Scott Fitzgerald famously observed that a first-rate intelligence is one that has the ability to function even when it holds two opposing ideas in mind at the same time.

 

By that measure, commercial real estate is filled with first-rate intelligence.

 

This is a profession that demands intimate understanding of local markets — down to an understanding of the traffic on individual street corners. It’s built on personal relationships and personal knowledge.

 

At the same time that commercial real estate is intensely local, it’s also driven by global forces. Decisions by the European Central Bank or the Chinese Ministry of Commerce create opportunities across the world.

 

Capstak meets the need of wise professionals who realize that success in this profession demands equal measures of local knowledge and global wisdom

 

We created Capstak as a forum, a place that provides sophisticated updates on global trends that influence local markets and individual deals.

 

At the same time, we created Capstak as community, a place where commercial real estate professionals — whether they specialize in development, brokerage, management or capital markets —build relationships. It’s a sort of virtual coffee shop where professionals can try out ideas, exchange information about projects and scout out partners.

 

Like most of my fellow professionals in commercial real estate, I take deep satisfaction from the act of creation. I have created a top-performing brokerage team. I have created successful industrial developments. I have created excellent assets from troubled projects.

 

Capstak, too, is a creative project, one that brings significant value to the $10 trillion commercial real estate market. We are sufficiently grown-up that we won’t make big claims that we expect to disrupt a market of this size. But we are making the commercial real estate market far more efficient.

 

The many intellectual challenges that arose in the creation of Capstak would have been even more daunting if not for the wisdom, experience and focus of Heather Goldman, who joined with me as a co-founder of the company.  I am excited and continually grateful for this opportunity to work with Heather and to learn from her.

 

But Heather and I are only the hosts of Capstak. We have built a venue, and our team at Capstak invites you to use it. We will be adding new functionality with each passing month. We want to hear from you about functions that would improve your experience on the site. We want to hear your thoughts about ways that Capstak can continue to create more efficient markets for commercial real estate.  Capstak today is only a beginning. As the needs of the profession continue to change, Capstak will change, too.
